brief facts funnies courses
What you see on youtube is regurgitated information from reddit with the sole purpose of those videos being the ad revenue. By all means, get that bag, but lets make some things clear.
Who's that russian guy mentioned in the ratlobbers video? - I won't say outright (cause its more fun when you find it out yourself), but it's not rlx and not jonny.
Why did that russian guy say these mean racist things? - Datae was called someone that loves to use the n-word. Cause he does. Seems like the intention was lost due to the language barrier. See the funnies for proof.
What did datae 100% do? - Leak ip's from the telemetry data that was not properly removed in one of the publicly released DRM bypasses (on accident).
How was this allowed to happen? - I (rlx) was an idiot and did not even think that telemetry could end up in a heavily obfuscated module. Entirely my fault, being young with no experience in about anything sucks. Though does that make datae any better in this case? Not really, leaking ip's and trying to publicly humiliate poor kids from eastern europe is a foul move regardless.
Wait, so you are saying that datae did not upload malware?!?!? - EHH, not so fast, comrade. I've thought so too. It does appear like datae allegedly had done targetted attacks on certain people. No leaking of the "beatrun crack" to the public, though. Even then, did you agree to a privacy policy when using the demo or the patreon version? Maybe to a TOS? No? Too bad, datae stored your IP, steam account, what map you are playing on and the addon count regardless. It was sent everytime you launched the mod.
Ok, so what are the guarantees this beatrun version is safe? - There's no binary modules anymore. Optional ones for cool functionality with the OS, sure, but other than that you can play with this mod without stupid modules running god knows what on your pc.
Uh, I'm gonna go support datae anyway. - Go ahead. Just know you won't be getting into beatrun any time soon. The guy stopped giving access or releasing updates ever since the full source code was extracted.
Here's a rough timeline of when and how the cracks happened.
Legacy - No full body animations. The DRM circumvention was as easy as running the game with runasdate/changing your system time. Initially found out by a retarded kid named kodelash.
Newer, but old - This time with full body animations. The DRM circumvention was running the game with a steam emulator. Not very pretty. Found out by c4nk and elision.
Newer, but old (round 2) - Now you could run the game properly while handing off the emulation only to the beatrun modules. Though it left too much exposed and was inherently unsafe. Found out by rlx.
Current - Not a whole lot changed in terms of the DRM aside from a few license file redherrings, but there was another method found: just hooking and dumping lual_loadbuffer. Thus the full source code was extracted with the help of elision, because loadbuffer accepts bytecode and the decompiled output was a mess. Found out by rlx.
In addition, the modules were protected by code virtualizer, thus obfuscating what the modules actually could have done. Understandable for a DRM, but allowing datae of all people full access to your pc unmonitored? Hell no.
